I've not removed the left side personnally.

Have you taken the gear shift lever off?

The Clymer manual mentions removing the clutch cable actuating arm as well, and be aware of loose locating dowels when you do get the cover off!

 

Yep - got all arms off. But thanks about the loose parts, I'll remember that if it moves!

 

Does the cover wiggle? Have you unscrewed the starter motor?

 

Yep it wiggles. Starter? Do I have to disconnect the starter? :doh:

 

I dont know about the classics but on the GS the starter motor has two screws that hold it to the left hand housing. You need to take those out in order to remove the case. Might be the same on your bike.

Yes - just getting as many ideas as possible before I wreck it with my meagre talent and have to call out a professional! :big grin:
I'll check the starter and see if that's connected but I did remove all bolts (I could find) to the plate.

 

:howdy: Just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. Clutch cover came off yesterday after a another look at the 'Chain Gang' FAQ and a bit at the bottom of the page I missed :doh:
Replaced the actuation arm with the gear shifter and used that to turn the cover off - worked a treat :dance:
Soon be back on the road! :riding:

Just a wee suggestion, in your profile, where the location is, you may notice many people put the model of bike they own, which makes it much simpler when asking technical questions, as there are quite a few differences between certain parts of the different models.
